Try Again

“Shouldnta left you without a dope beat to step to…”

What a better day to re-launch my blog than on the greatest day of the year….my birthday! I spent the weekend in rehearsals and celebrating SF Pride and my birthday with close friends. And tonight I get to have a lovely birthday dinner with my day ones, my beautiful family. I’ve officially been alive for a quarter of a century. Ever the dreamer, I once thought I’d be a successful full-time actress and married with a baby on the way by the time I turned 25.

Oh, my sweet summer child.

I’m not doing half bad, though. I have a degree in theatre from one of the most prestigious universities in the world. I hold down a part-time marketing job and gigs in murder mystery theatre and direct sales. I’m pursuing my acting dreams as Horatio in Hamlet this summer and Demetrius in A Midsummer Night’s Dream this fall.  I’ve survived depression, anxiety, my parents’ divorce, and five whole months of a Trump presidency.  I am kind and smart, a strong writer and a great friend. Not bad at all.

So keeping all that in mind, I’m cutting myself some slack and showing myself the kindness I deserve. It’s ok that I’ve had trouble staying consistent with this blog, or that I haven’t posted in several months. It’s ok for me to dust myself off and restart again. With every stumble and misstep, I learn something new. My biggest takeaway this time? This girl needs structure. Lemme tell you how it’s gonna be:

I’m going to be publishing once a week, on Mondays.

Topics will include:

  1. Deep dives into specific cultural theatre practices (i.e. Yoruba Traditions in Cuban Theatre; The Rise of the Yiddish Theatre)
  2. An intersectional issue either within the theatre world (sexism’s role in casting; black femininity on today’s stage) or as addressed in a play or by a theatre company
  3. A play, theatre-focused book, or play adaptation review
  4. A log of my own day working in the theatre
  5. Occasional life update post about my own wellness goals or something yummy I ate

I’m carving out protected time every week to write and planning my topics at least a month in advance.

I don’t do last minute anymore.

Succinct, in-depth, high-quality posts are the only pieces getting published. No exceptions.

It’s always better to skip a week than to post something subpar. There’s too much writing on the internet to be wasting my time or yours on something less-than. I’ve also updated my list of plays here.

So, all that said, are there any topics you’d like to read about? Next week’s topic is Boricua theatre because I’m going to Puerto Rico on Thursday! Stay tuned, and thanks, as always, for reading.

Love and theatre,
-K

PS: Did I mention it’s my birthday?
